The hijaz scale, also known as the Harmonic Minor or Phrygian Dominant scale, features a distinctive augmented second (a 1.5-step interval). This creates a highly exotic, mysterious, and "spicy" sound commonly found in Arabic, Flamenco, and Middle Eastern music. Unlike standard modern instruments that tune the note A above middle C to 440 Hz, this scale tunes that same note to 432 Hz. Proponents believe this slightly lower frequency produces a warmer, more relaxing, and spiritually "natural" resonance. The 432 Hz Hijaz tuning is a favorite among sound healing practitioners and is frequently featured on meditative instruments.
